We often hear that young children are like sponges, and that they learn a second language faster than an adult. From my experience teaching young children aged between 6 and 12 years old, this can easily happen if they’re often exposed to the language and if we use activities that motivate them and make them feel involved in their learning process. The more fun we put into teaching a language, the more students will participate and want to learn. Although they learn new vocabulary very quickly, it is also a fact that, if they don't practice a lot, they will soon forget it. Learning new vocabulary needs repetition and we can do that, without making it boring, by using games, songs and repetition drills. Today I started teaching the months of the year to my 3rd graders and it was really fun! I used the song below and by the end of the lesson they were already singing it without any help. Here are some other fun resources that you can use when teaching this topic. Online gamesSongs and VideosOther resources from my site:All my teaching packs were created for my students. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Christmas is that special season that brings out the kid in all of us, it's the time of spending time with our family, of sharing, caring and giving. Although the spirit is the same, Christmas is celebrated differently all over the world, and every country has its own traditions. I've also found this fabulous site with information about Christmas traditions and many fun activities for this magical season: I gave them the step by step instructions and they "took over" the classroom. By the end of the lesson, after all that crafting, the classroom floor was all covered with rice, but it was a very rewarding experience, because the students were very happy and really proud of their work! Here are some pictures of the snowmen they created: Music is a great tool for teaching languages to children. Apart from creating a positive atmosphere in the classroom, songs allow every student to participate. Using songs is a fun and easy way to introduce new vocabulary and grammatical structures. They will surely bounce around your students heads for a long time!
